Music in the Classroom

More often than not, I am playing music in my classroom.

I love listening to music. I also struggle to write and read if I'm listening to music. It's a bit of a struggle (albeit a very minor one) for me. Every year, at the very start, my students are surveyed on their preferences and learning styles. I always ask them if they enjoy working while listening to music.

In order to accommodate all of my learners, I tend to play classical or wordless music. I prefer instrumentals to songs with lyrics because I find they can be distracting in many ways.

1. You may find yourself typing the lyrics rather than focusing on hello from the other siiiide (see what I mean).

2. Students may feel the need to sing along and completely forget about what they were actually supposed to be doing.

So, over the last few years I have been working hard to compile some go-to playlists on spotify for my classroom. I wanted to share those with you here. There are instrumentals, classicals, zen, pop, and other clean, safe-for-class playlists. I have pump-up jams for testing. I have happy peppy morning songs. I even have non-religious holiday music and classroom transformation playlists. I'm working on making each of these public, but for the time being, enjoy what's currently available!

Morning Songs

Pump Up Jams

Pop (clean)

Instrumental Pop

Classical Nerdy

You can also search my handle (@theory2really) on spotify and follow any and all of the playlists or just follow me to see what other random, fun stuff I'll be sharing.

Comment below if you've got some good suggestions for songs to add to the playlists. I'm always looking for some popular songs with clean lyrics!
